I think it's worth pointing out that Affie's current chicken avatar wasn't the one certain people had a problem with, it was the rather disgusting (but IMHO not particularly rude or offensive) picture of someone with some... interesting dental work which was the culprit.

No-one is saying chicken is offensive. Pictures of chickens portrayed in such a way that they look like something else might be. As with everything, the official policy on this board is to leave it up to each user's personal judgement as to what is and isn't acceptable. I'd also expect that if someone was told that their avatar is offensive they wouldn't mind changing it in order to keep the peace and make my life easier.
