I've dipped deep into my rather shallow pockets and splashed out on a memory upgrade for the virtual server the site runs on. Hopefully this will resolve some of the apache web server stability problems we've been experiencing lately. I'm not entirely sure whether the upgrade has been applied yet, but if it hasn't there may be some reboots and downtime in the next few days.
I've also installed an SSL server so I can log in to reboot the server if Remote Desktop goes down, which is exactly what happened the last crash (apache uses too much memory, remote desktop goes down - blame Microsoft for that one).
I will be looking at reinstalling and reconfiguring Apache, MySQL and PHP to see if I can get it to use less memory. This will lead to perhaps an afternoon of downtime in the future - probably in early July. Just a heads up
