Word Censor

OK, after much hand-wringing I've implemented a word censor on the forums. This is after a recent spate of bad language and some people contacting me to ask what can be done about it.

I fully expect that some of you will attempt to find rude words that are not filtered, so will be adding and possibly removing words to and from the list over the next few weeks. Also topic titles and the shoutbox are not included in the censor so please exercise restraint in that. Moderators will probably change the title if it's too offensive.

Generally I ask you all to speak nicely to each other - we're all brothers and sisters here and there's no call to use some words.

Update: Have removed the word filter as Paggy and Affie refuse to play along with my fascist censorship regime Smile

There are other options for those that want bad words filtered.

The serious part of it was though that I totally aprove of cencoring some harsh words here and there, though I honestly can't understand who those complaining about it is.. All adults here, aren't we? Oh noes! Forgot you minimon! Smile

Still I can relate to having a decent language in the forums.

What I can't relate to on the other hand is deleting of whole posts.. that is pure cencorship and according to the freedom of speech that also exists in clown we should not at all do it. Like the one Mags posted here earlier today.. Not fun reading at all, but it learned me a new way of looking at Saevar.. Which I for one found totally unacceptable. At least if it's nothing more to it than Mags posted on these forums.. If it's more to it than that, then have me excused Saevar.

I have no clue about who deleted it, but gone it is and unless it was Mags who asked for it to be deleted I can't approve of it..

Yeah I heard about that post but never saw it. I'd like whoever deleted it to contact me via PM urgently please.

I think as regards moderators I will be implementing something more formal, so if a moderator deletes a post they move it to a moderators forum and give an explanation as to why it was moved on the public forums. Details to follow.

Fair enough Gloom.

I have some guidelines for Circus Wardens and they now have their own forum.

Quote::

1. Always say what you change. If you delete a post, or modify someone's post, always post saying what you've done.

2. Swearing is OK. Editing out all swearing is pointless and time-consuming. Only gratuitous swearing should concern us.

6. Always warn before you act. Tell people if they're out of line, don't just delete or modify their posts.

7. Spam bots are evil. If you see spam or advertising, it's OK to delete it straight away without telling anyone.

And above all...
8. Remember the pie. Remember, we're a close community here so deal with others with respect.

I think this will be fine to guide our moderators for the time being, unless anyone has any further suggestions?

Who are you to decide what I need to read or not?? Get a grip. Cencorship is not a part of the modern world my friend.

I agree Wood. Censorship is bad.

So is riping parts of a private discussion only to publish them to look someone look bad. Thsi wasnt about freedom of speeach. This was pure BS.

Wood, you can hardly claim we have a culture of censorship here Smile

Yes, censorship is bad, but this is a public forum and we need to keep things civil. Private posts should remain private, and malicious posts will not be tolerated. Put any bunch of people together and there will always be a few mistakes, misunderstandings and posts people later regret so I think we've done quite well so far here in the circus. The new moderator guidelines basically say what I think everyone knew already.

Now I don't know what the post was about but I have confidence in Gloom and don't think he would delete it for no good reason. Sure he didn't say he'd deleted it, but that was an honest oversight and he's apologised.

Private post should not be posted on forum, at least not before both parts agree on it. I find nothing wrong with Gloom removing that post as it would only full the flame war.
